At nine years old, Nat Emerson was taught to find spoons in the curves of tree branches by a folk-craft legend. In his teens he worked for a traditional woodworking school. Later he apprenticed under an art-furniture master before developing a rich career in the restoration of antique houses. The common thread has been a deep relationship with shapes and a savvy for spatial reasoning, be it in the curves of trees or the moldings of a high-style Georgian staircase.
The dichotomy of rough textures and smooth painted surfaces in his work are analogous to the full spectrum life he has lived. He is well-traveled on humble and grand scales. He has toed the lines of both wealth and poverty.
The son of two spiritual leaders, Nat is naturally contemplative. While most of his life has been an exploration of craft, he experienced a calling to produce artwork based on his unique beliefs.
Nat lives and works in rural New Hampshire where he hand-built his own house on a crystal quartz quarry.
